One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest(1975)(Movies To See Before You Die)

Rated as one of top five movies by the maestro  Miloš Forman. Not a spine chilling drama, but an engrossing stuff with excellent storyline, innovative scenes and new shot taking methods which were seen for the first time in this movie at that time. For example, the famous scene of climax, which was also used in its publicity posters.
You keep on crying all the time in the movie. The plot is based on a mental institution subject and is handled perfectly by the director in the world famous Formian Style. Although, personally I rate a few other movies of Forman as his top 5 but still if you are a drama fan and like mid 70s, 90s stuff then oo for this movie at once. Interestingly, many Indian film-makers were highly influenced by this successful classic. Balachandra Menon’s “Ithiri Neram Othiri Karyam” directed by himself also followed the same story pattern and so did Mohan Lal's "Thalavattam".

Khoya Khoya Chand(2007)(Movies To See Before You Die)(Drama)

A fast paced exciting drama about  the lifestyle of celebrities with aplomb with the 1950s film industry as its backdrop .Circa 1960s Lucknow-based author Zafar Ali Naqvi, who has issues with his father and his four wives, including the 4th one who lusts after him, re-locates to Bombay, starts writing for movies, and falls in love with starlet Nikhat Sheikh . A very finely edited movie with not a single dull moment before the climax. Only at the end it becomes a little slow but then picks up fast with the entire mystery unfolding.
Lucknow locales have been shot beautifully and you will surely enjoy these new locations not usually seen in the recent movies (Arbaz khan's DEBANG2 was also shot in Lucknow, but he could not capture the beauty of the city). In this brilliantly wriiten script, every single character on the screen has some role in the trap laid for the zafair's mother. Fine acting by everyone makes it a strongly recommended movie for a good weekend. A tight racy drama and one of the best in this genre. In short, you are sure going to enjoy this ride called khoya khoya chand.
Directed BySudhir Mishra
Starring :Shiney Ahuja & Other

Gloria Fernandes from U.S.A(1998)&Purab aur Pashchim(1970)

P.G Vishwambaran made “Gloria Fernandes from U.S.A” with Babu Antony in 1998 , which had Babu Antony marrying a foreign lady.

The interesting point here is that the above  movie can't be called as original work. The actual movie behind the  version is
Purab Aur Paschim released in 1970 directed by Manoj Kumar.

My Boss, My Hero(2001) - (Movies To See Before You Die - Gangster)

This is a fine example of class cinema and perfect acting. One of the finest actors in the korean cinema, Jung Joon-ho rightly deserved the OSCAR he didnt got for his brilliant act in this movie It is the first of a trilogy with My Boss, My Teacher in 2006 and The Mafia, The Salesman in 2007.. Jung Woong-in also excels in the role of right hand man who is helping jung in his attempt and you will fall in love with him while watching the movie.
This movie has added one special thing to this everyday life of Jopoks - a mandatory requirement of an educational certificate. The director deserves congratulations for directing a movie which is and will be remembered always for its important theme.

Bollywood also tried to copy this movie with Sanjay duth as an gangster in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. co-starring Gracy singh & Arshad warsi but couldn’t reach even closer to “My Boss My Hero”- A Cinematic Excellence. A smash hit five star rating and strongly recommended movie.

Friday (2012)&Engaeyum Eppothum(2011)

"Friday" starring Fahad Fazil & Ann Augastine has a first half with heavy dose of love and drama. But its second half is clearly inspired from the 2011 released movie "Engeyum Eppothum".
Though there is no auto riksha driver in the Tamil version but rest is all there in the same way.The film tells the life stories of many people who arrive into a town, A tough type hero; girl is seen quite busy attending the phone calls, lovers are in the same city that they dont know each other. And in a Titanic kind of climax.

Darshanam (1973) & its similarities.

This cannot be taken as a straight inspiration, but the Japanece masterpiece Crimson Bat, the Blind Swordswoman” (1969) must have been there in the mind of director PN Menon, while he thought of the theme of Darshanam. And though the movie cannot be rated among his best, it can still be called an interesting watch with an entertaining climax and a surprise twist.

Undoubtedly, “Darshanam” has a different concept but it also has its similarities, especially in the blind angle and the revenge, which makes us remember the Japanese Gem “Crimson Bat, the Blind Swordswoman”. In all, a good sincere attempt by PN Menon, considering its offbeat subject & treatment.
